Ps 119: 17 ¶ Deal bountifully with your servant, that I may live and keep your word.
18 ¶ Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.
19 ¶ I am a sojourner on the earth; hide not your commandments from me!
20 ¶ My soul is consumed with longing for your rules at all times.
While this may be a reference to material blessing, I believe based on surrounding context that it is more likely a reference to spiritual bounty and understanding of God’s Word. The Psalmist cries out to God for revealed wonders in His word, an attitude of eager anticipation we would all do well to have every time we open the Bible.
I have shared previously my understanding of the eternality of each person and this passage reinforces the understanding that our lives are too brief to spend looking solely for immediate relief, gratification and present riches at the expense of losing our souls. We are sojourners in life on our way to an eternal dwelling place.
We can either live for all we can squeeze out of this world before we die, building a material home to be left behind and with little thought to our future, or we can always keep the end in mind and lay up treasure for the life to come.
My prayer and I hope yours as well is that God will grow within me a consuming longing for His Word at all times and that my life will bring Him glory and be pleasing in His sight.
